Not sure why we voted to review this over magic jammer...When it
first came out, I main decked 3x magic jammers, and 3x magician
of faiths...Anyone see where I'm going with this....It's why I
won a lot....Anyway, I digress...Today, we are reviewing Spell
Shield Type-8. As in last weeks review, I will be
comparing it to its big brother, Magic Jammer. To be
honest, this card is terrible, and I will tell you why... At
first glance, it appears to be better then magic jammer, since
if a spell targets a monster, it can be negated at no additional
cost, and you can still discard a card to negate other spells.
However, the card you discard HAS to be a spell card. So
what's this mean to you?
1) In today's meta game, decks run very few spell cards, and
the ones that are in decks are vital to the deck, you don't want
to be discarding spell cards. Magic Jammer will let you
discard any card you want, like a reborn able beat stick maybe?
Tree born Frog anyone?
2) There are just about no spell cards out there that
specifically target a monster, the only one I can think of off
the top of my head that comes to mind in teir 1 decks is brain
control, no other tier 1 spell cards target a monster. So
what's that mean you ask? It means that the first effect
is useless 99% of the time.
Here's the point I am trying to make if you did not catch
it... Magic Jammer is a good card, but is not used used because
its a natural -1 hand advantage, and in this meta, hand
advantage is everything, so -1's are typically not played, 1-1's
are.
Magic Jammer is > Spell Shield Type-8
Analogy : Magic Jammer is greater then Spell Type-8 :: Magic
Jammer is not used in Competitive Decks :: Spell Shield Type-8
is utter garbage
Have a nice day ^_^

This week we take a look at another underused trap card known as
Spell Shield Type-8. Basically what this does is a similar
version of MAgic Jammer with an added ability. When an opponent
activates a spell card, you can discard one spell card from your
hand (which is the slight variation from MJ) to negate that
spell and send it to grave. Majic Jammer allows you to discard
any card from your hand to negate, so in this aspect, Magic
Jammer would probably be the better choice to go with.
However, unlike Magic Jammer, this card has a bonus ability. If
the spell card that was activated specifically targets a
monster, that spell can be negated and destroyed with no cost.
This would mean that those decks based around running equip
spells (Mage Power, United We Stand, etc) and even some more
commonly used spells (such as Enemy Controller, Book of Moon,
Rush Recklessly) can be stopped at no cost via this trap card.
However, this card has seen less play with the big emergence of
Smashing Ground, Fissure, etc. Since these such cards do not
specifically target a monster, the bonus effect of Spell Shield
Type-8 becomes practically useless. Also, equip spells in the
dueling world have also diminished quite a bit. Probably the
most common equip card used now is Premature Burial, which
targets a monster in the graveyard (also rendering 8's bonus
effect useless).
Pros:
[*] Negates a spell that specifically targets, with no cost
[*] Counter Trap (Spell Speed 3)
[*] Magic Jammer ability
Cons:
[*] No cost ability only for cards that specifically target
[*] Must discard a spell card to use 'Magic Jammer' effect
[*] Use of non-targeting cards has increased
[*] No spell card(s) in hand = no effect
[*] bad topdeck
Overall, there are other cards that can be used in its place. In
my opinion, this card never really caught on (except possibly
when UWS and Mage Power were big).

Spell Shield Type-8, an apparently good trap. its cost is a
Spell Card from the hand, except when the spell you're trying to
get rid of targets. since the use of equips has almost vanished
and use of non-target has practically jumped and a frog on "all
(the flies) you can eat day", this trap just isn't as good as it
could be. anyway, here are some pros and cons:
+ it's free if used against a targetting spell
+ it's a bloody counter trap
+ Magic Jammer-esque ability
- the 'free effect' can't do a thing against non-targetting
spells
- 'Magic Jammer'-esque effect costs a specific kind of card
(spell card)
- non-targetting spells are a lot more commonly used now
- can be useless in some situations
On a side Note: I think just a big load of bollocks that nearly
half of the cards i use tend to be viewed as usless. bunch of
bloody tarts. o.o
