Prototype

SpongeBob SquarePants Toothbrush

After the concept selection phase we knew what we wanted in our redesigned toothbrush. With these ideas in mind we were able to generate a prototype for our final design. This prototype toothbrush builds off of our original product to become better in almost every aspect. The cleaning technology is far superior. With both rotating and vibrating bristles, this toothbrush will ensure that a child's mouth is clean. It is also visually appealing and the music device will entice children to brush more regularly.

Please check out the final design by looking at the pictures below, or by clicking on the image above to see a video animation of the improved SpongeBob SquarePants toothbrush.

A SolidWorks Part file is available for our toothbrush design here.

Final Design Description

Exterior:

For a more stable grip, finger indentation will be molded into the sides of the toothbrush. The indentations will be made of rubber to prevent slipping when the product becomes wet. The on/off switch will be included in one button also made of rubber. The button size will be increased and slightly raised above surface level to make it easier for the consumer to push, as well as to notice. The button will also be in the shape of a star to make the product more appealing. The battery cover will be placed at the base of the toothbrush, and it will be held shut by one screw for safety. A rubber ring will also be placed on the inside of the battery cover to further prevent water from leaking inside the product.

The head of the toothbrush will have a stationary base with a rotating top. The head of the product as a whole will vibrate for intense cleaning. When flipped over there will be a rubber tongue cleaner, which will have thin grooves in order to scrape bacteria from the tongue. The head will also contain a combination of two different sized bristles with a soft to medium stiffness, as well as strategically placed thin gel bristles used to massage gums.

A small speaker with a radius of approximately one centimeter will be placed on the front of the product above the power button. When turned on the theme song to Spongebob Squarepants will play for two minutes. By doing so the consumer may look forward to using the product more frequently, and may also develop the habit of brushing their teeth for an appropriate amount of time. The overall casing of the product will be made using a thick plastic for extra durability.

Appearance:

The product has a SpongeBob Squarepants theme, so Spongebob and friends will be placed on the front of the product along with bright colors.

Interior:

The AA batteries will by placed on top of each other, in order to make the product more slender and comfortable for the targeted consumer to hold.
The motor size will slightly increase due to the new features, such as the vibrating bristles and the playing of music. In order to make the bristles vibrate an eccentric, off centered weight will attach to the drive rod, which is connected to the motor. In order to play the melody the motor will be equipped with a music generating circuit and an electronic music chip, which will be connected to the output speaker. The on/off button will act as the power input and the system will produce the music output signal to the speaker.
