Customer Needs

Customer Needs

For our customer analysis my team focused on the concerns and interests of its primary and secondary target costumers.  To attain informational needs about our consumers we surveyed two different groups of people.  One survey was taken from an elementary school.  Our product is designed for children ages three and up so we surveyed children in that age range to find out their needs as customers.  The main consumers for our product though are the parents of these children or adults in general.  We held a survey online through a blog site known as Facebook, and we also reviewed several other consumers through personal trials.  For all surveys our main focus was finding out what the consumers wanted in an electronic toothbrush.

Raw Data

  • “longer softer bristles and shorter, stiffer bristles will allow the bristles to bend and somewhat get inside indents and spaces easier while still having the stiffer bristles brush the face of the tooth.”
  • “haha okay im obsessed with dental hygine and i have like 5 toothbrushes. My favorite one is an electric one that has kick ass firm bristles, and a nice soft handle, and its a pretty blue shade...ANNNNNND it plays music! i know! its awesome! When you brush your teeth it plays "canned heat" , you know that song that napoleon dynamite danced to... anyway, thats my favorite toothbrush :)”
  • “ummm it should beeee pretty colorsssss.....andddd it should be cordless so you can take it whereever and use it in the car:) andddddddd umm it should have softer and longer bristles haha”
  • “I'm only posting this because you love me... But. First things first. Size and weight of this thing must be considered. It shouldn't be any longer than a normal tooth brush. The handle should be small enough to fit into a girls hand comfortably and it shouldn't weigh as much as a brick. Basically make it sleek girl. For the brush part: It should have 4 types of bristles, long coarse and long soft, short coarse and short soft. the head should be broken up into to parts. The first part is a spinning circle and the second part is square and vibrates up and down. As far as power it could either be AA battery operated (which would piss me off if i had to keep replacing batteries). Or make it a rechargeable ordeal like a beard trimmer. Colors for the thing are whatever.. i don't give a sh*t. Thats all the help i'm gonna give you... love ya”

Analysis Criteria

After collecting the raw customer data from Facebook and the elemenrary school children, we then consolidated the data into need statements. In doing so, we found the aspects that the customers requested the most. Our product should reflect these opinions since they are shared by a wide number of our customers. We also filtered out some of the statements which were irrelevant to our design. With these criteria in mind, we compiled the list of need statements below:

Need Statements

  • Bristles are comfortable during use.
  • Product is visually appealing to children.
  • Toothbrush is easy for a child to hold and use.
  • Toothbrush is light weight.
  • Product is affordable.
  • Toothbrush is effective at cleaning.
  • Long operation time.
