geometric approach:
- reference globe
- developable surfaces: cylinder, cone, plane

class:
- cylindrical, conic, planar (azimuthal)

aspect:
- equatorial, transverse, polar, oblique...normal
- central meridian
- centered on point, latitude of origin

case: 
- tangent (simple) or secant

standard line, 2 lines, point, (2 points)
principal scale 
scale factor (SF)
pattern of distortion

properties:
equal area (equivalent), conformal, neither (compromise)
