Today we met with individuals from HP, the University Libraries, WPSU, and Rutgers Library to talk about a new emerging storage technology called XAM. We have developed a proof of concept application that utilizes a XAM front ended disk subsystem. Problem is, when we show the proof of concept application we wrote to prospective users, it looks like the same old traditional CIFS/NFS file save functions we have today. Big deal. zzzzzz. So what is different when I use the XAM API to write content to disk?
For starters, we can tag or mark up the digital object that is being saved with all kinds of context about the object being stored, such as retention requirements, ownership, access controls, title author, and so on. This list of metatdata, or data about the data could be endless it seems. Thats why we asked librarians to join our discussion today. They are classification experts and can help IT folks like me, wrap some sanity into this marking up of data. There are hundreds, if not thousands of metadata standards out there today, and we think they can show us which standards exist or need created to help us save and manage digital content for a very long time.
If your world is storage management and your facing scale issues with your environment, you might want to checkout what SNIA.org is doing to help us solve many storage issues facing large scale data centers.

Like the snowball effect, XAM and Next Generation Storage solutions keeps getting more and more interesting and keeps getting more and more press. Ultimately we will be saving our content a lot differently than we do today. 2 blogs entries from key players in my world of storage.
