Database Web Application

IST 210 - Organization of Data

Create a fully-featured web application powered by a relational database. Creativity, originality, and technical complexity will factor heavily during evaluation.

Desperado: A Database-Driven Dating Website

Desperado is a dating website that connects people based on their personality traits and social values. Anybody can perform regional searches for companions, but to view a profile you need to create an account. Membership unlocks more advanced search features and the option to join the VIP service.

VIP Desperados can rank how important it is for their partner to have certain attributes, allowing even greater control over the matching process. They can also view compatability scores, which provide a quick percentage-based rating of how well-matched two people are.

Video Documentary

IST 110 - Intro to Information Sciences & Technology

Research, develop, and produce a short video presenting any technology. Include the technology's history, how it works, and who uses it.

Storage: A History of Optical Data Medium

Our video covered the history of optical data storage technology and the future of multi-layer disc media. The protagonist struggles to find a suitable format to store his data while shady characters suggest increasingly modern technology. The search leads to a climactic showdown between the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray consortiums, both vying to become the new industry standard.

Visually, we wanted to incorporate both gritty and glossy surfaces to achieve a film-noir style influenced by The Matrix and Sin City. We shot everything in one night withstanding the 35 degree rainy weather and used Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to edit the film and apply luminance and high contrast video filters.

Video Documentary

ENGL 015 - Rhetoric and Composition

Research, develop, and produce a short video presenting a controversial issue. Informing and persuading your target audience is critical to success.

One Wasteful Nation

This documentary explores America's lack of resource conservation in terms of food, water, trash disposal, poverty, chemicals, metals, and fossil fuels. Using comparative research and live interviews with Penn State students, we argue that the United States is world's waste leader, but could potentially do the most good.

GIS Mapping & Reports

GEOG 160 - Mapping Our Changing World

Explore desktop and web-based mapping software, then create project reports and publish them to the web.

I decided to have a little fun with this course and created my own design to display the projects instead of using the provided template. My favorite part about this course was using my IST skills to write a little Javscript that makes the maps more interactive and useful. For example, I created a draggable marker with the Google Maps API that re-calculates latitude/longitude whenever you move it.
