Research

My academic interests are the archaeology and history of Rome. In my studies I seek to combine archaeological material with historical evidence to discuss social aspects of the Roman army. I have studied ancient military history as well as Roman commemoration, memory, and literacy. For my PhD dissertation I intend to study literacy in the ancient military.

I am involved with two ongoing archaeological projects in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project (PKAP Website) is an archaeological survey and excavation near the modern city of Larnaca in southern Cyprus. PKAP is under the direction of Dr. Bill Caraher (University of North Dakota), Dr. R. Scott Moore (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), and Dr. David Pettegrew (Messiah College). I am currently publishing the metal finds, including a large assemblage of Hellenistic and Roman era projectiles and sling-bullets. The Mopsos Survey (Site Blog) is an archaeological survey of the eastern Cilician plain in southern Turkey. The project is under the direction of Dr. Ann Killebrew (Penn State University). My research interests with the Mopsos Survey include a ceramic analysis of Eastern Terra Sigillata pottery.
