Broadly speaking, I am interested in how intelligence and human cognition change over the life span. My research interests are more focused at understanding how biological, health, psychological and social factors impact adult cognitive development. My collaboration with Sherry Willis and Warner Schaie on the Seattle Longitudinal study aims to understand what factors are indeed contributing to cognitive decline. We are also investigating if cognitive decline can be observed in midlife for individuals with known risk factors for dementia, such as APOE-e4. I am also interested in understanding what cognitive development looks like through a population perspective. First, are findings related to human cognition that are observed in “small sample” longitudinal studies similar to the findings observed in demographic longitudinal studies? I believe a comparison of this would yield novel and exciting results. Second, I feel that the demographic perspective is useful at answering questions regarding cognitive aging that are not sufficiently answered with smaller sample studies.
