This year's national Sports Turf Manager's Association annual conference was recently held in Austin, TX. Besides professors, Turfgrass staff, and Beaver Stadium grounds personnel, Penn State sent 19 students including 12 undergraduates from the 4-year turf program, 4 two-year turf students, and 3 turf science graduate students. These students traveled to the event to either compete in the SAFE Foundation's Student Challenge or receive a SAFE Scholarship or both. We took a couple graduate students to help manage/coach the undergraduate students.

The students spent three days attending conference seminars, visiting exhibitors in the trade show and enjoying Austin, TX.

In the student challenge Penn State's Two-year team placed second and are pictured below.

These persons included: Jeff Borger, David Huff, Al Jarrett, Al Turgeon, Pete Landschoot, Danny Kline, Max Schlossberg, John Kaminski, Andy McNitt, Mike Shelly, Chase Rogan, Tom Serensits, Kyle Hivner, Tanner Delvalle, Kyung Han, and Yu Huang.

Derek Pruyne.jpgUNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Derek Pruyne, a Penn State student majoring in Turfgrass Science, has been selected as a College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society Internship Award winner. Pruyne is the son of Thomas and Lori Pruyne of Athens, PA.

The award, which includes a $750 stipend, was established to encourage students to enroll in internship courses offered within the College of Agricultural Sciences. Winners are chosen on the basis of an internship plan, a final report on the internship, an employer evaluation and a letter of recommendation from the internship course supervisor.

Pruyne was an intern with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in Moosic, PA.

Mr. Pruyne will be traveling to Austin, TX next week to compete in the 2011 Student Challenge sponsored by the Sports Turf Manager's Association and Hunter Industires, he also is a lab assistant at Penn State performing turfgrass research.

"The Alumni Society recognizes the importance of on-the-job learning experience to prepare undergraduates for today's competitive job market," says Naomi Knaub, the college's director of alumni relations. "By working as interns, students can establish networks of professional contacts and discover which areas of specialization appeal to them."
