December 2011 Archives

While things are starting to wind down here, with students, faculty and staff thinking about the holidays and ringing in the New Year, there is no rest for the future students of Penn State!

Starting January 1, those students choosing to attend Penn State can access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the only necessary item needed to apply for most financial aid at Penn State. You can find the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/, but we also recommend that you read some of the wonderful resources available on our Student Aid website to make sure you complete the application appropriately.

In the “Future Students” section of the Student Aid website, you will find answers to the most common financial aid questions and other essential resources, as well as tutorials on the financial aid process. While researching your aid options, be sure to review the Financial Aid Eligibility Requirements for a full understanding of how to receive and retain your financial aid.

Some other important items about the FAFSA and financial aid at Penn State:

  • Penn State’s school code for the FAFSA is 003329

  • Completion of the FAFSA by March 1 allows for maximum consideration for financial aid

  • Filing of you and your family’s (if applicable) 2011 Federal Tax Return prior to the submission of the FAFSA is recommended, but you can also use estimated tax information

  • Student aid notifications are sent by late March for all FAFSA submissions received by March 1

Approximately 80% of all undergraduates at Penn State receive financial aid, but the sooner you start the process, the better the chances of maximizing your financial aid award. As you go through this financial aid process, do not forget to read up on the available scholarships for Penn State students, as well as scholarships that may be available from organizations in your area.

If you have any questions as you go through the financial aid process, do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Aid directly. They are available by phone Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, at 814-865-6301. Or, you can send them an email with your questions anytime.

Now that we have you looking forward to your responsibilities in 2012, we would like to remind all applicants and their families that our office is closed starting Friday, December 23. But, we will be back and ready to answer any of your questions on Tuesday, January 3. Happy Holidays from the Undergraduate Admissions Office!

Despite everything that's happened at Penn State over the past few weeks, it's largely been business as usual here in the admissions office. Applications are still coming in and we're hearing from lots of students and families who are excited about the great things a Penn State education can offer them.

Anne Rohrbach, our executive director, recently talked with the New York Times' The Choice blog about this year's applications.

In addition, Penn State President Rodney Erickson sent letters to prospective students reminding them of the university's commitment to academics, alumni connections, and community service through organizations like THON. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette goes into more detail about the president's letter.

Our student tour guides are as excited as ever to welcome visitors to University Park and express their Penn State pride on tours. This angle was covered by Onward State, a student-run news blog at Penn State that talked with the Lion Ambassadors tour group. Speaking of blogs, check our student blogs to hear our interns weigh in on recent events in their own words.

As always, if you have any questions about recent events or the admissions process, please don't hesitate to contact us.
