We are going to begin our first unit of your 6th grade year discussing animals. Before we can begin learning about animals, we need to know what an animal is. Follow each task below in order to develop an appropriate definition of animals.
Essential Question: What is an animal?

Task 1: Visit Blogger and post your response to the question: What is an animal?
- What do you think qualifies as an animal?
- Do all animals have share some of the same characteristics? If so, what are they?
LET'S FIND OUT WHAT AN ANIMAL REALLY IS.
Task 2: Complete Lesson 1.
Task 3: Take a Virtual Tour of the Elmwood Park Zoo to make a list of animal
characteristics.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Task 4: Complete - Are these animals? Explain your reasoning on a sheet of paper.
- Then complete the online survey.
Task 5: Complete the graphic organizer for the definition of an animal.
- If you decide to draw pictures, you need to print the document out first.
- Print the document when you are finished.
Task 6: Go back to Blogger and add another paragraph to your first post.
- What would you like to add to your thoughts on "What is an animal?"
- Were you correct or incorrect about anything? Explain.
- What did you learn from your research?
