Ilyse Aber (Warminister, PA)
Sophomore, Music Education
Symphonic Band, Fall Athletic Band
Ilyse’s favorite thing about Penn State is the Creamery! She likes baking, watching movies, reading, and going to PSU sporting events, as well as playing wonderful music with the clarinet studio. She is involved in Encore THON and NAfME. She loves hanging out with the studio and having fun and likes that, by playing music together, everyone in the studio becomes a better musician. Her favorite teaching moment was helping students in an elementary school music class to play the recorder.


Erin Blumling (Hummelstown, PA)
Junior, Childhood and Early Adolescent Education, Special Education Minor, Music Performance Minor, Blue Band
Erin made some of her best friends in the clarinet studio and loves that, at Penn State, she gets to meet new people every day! She is involved with Harmony (a performing arts club for kids with and without special needs) and Blue Band Bible Study. Outside of music, her interests include teaching, drinking coffee, dogs, pilates, and being an extra in her roommate’s movie. Her favorite musical experience was playing at the President’s Concerts with Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Philadelphia and Harrisburg­­making music with talented people in beautiful settings.


Clarissa Budd (Hollidaysburg, PA)

Clarissa cherishes the wonderful people she’s met and the incredible friends she has made at Penn State. Aside from reading, writing, cooking, and traveling, she enjoys attending and being a part of performances. She is involved in NAfME and NBA, and loves the clarinet studio because “WE ARE” a family.


Brooke Cichocki (Zionsville, PA) (Webmaster, Clarinet Club)

Brooke’s favorite thing about Penn State is the events that bring the whole community together (like THON and football games). She is involved in CHAARG (Changing Health Attitudes + Actions to Recreate Girls), Encore THON, National Band Association, NAfME, and the Schreyer Honors College. Outside of music, she loves to hike, run, kayak, and practice yoga. Her favorite teaching experience so far was having the opportunity to travel to Jamaica and teach elementary general music to children in the village of Portland through the Jamaica Field Service Project.


Ryan Czekaj (State College, PA) (Treasurer, Clarinet Club)

When he’s not stargazing, mini golfing, or making snow angels, Ryan is busy as the finance chair of the Encore THON group, and is an active member of NAfME and NBA. He loves how the School of Music gives its students the perfect balance of a small community feel and a big school environment—it has all the resources of a large university, but keeps the sense of community and family. Musically, his favorite moment was performing with SWE for Mackey’s Wine Dark Sea. His favorite teaching experience thus far was being a counselor for the Central Oak Heights Middle School Music Camp.


Olivia Dowd (Bethel Park, PA)

Symphonic Band, Blue Band
Olivia is very involved around campus, through NAfME, NBA, Blue Band Bible Study, Musicology Club, the Schreyer Honors College, College of Arts and Architecture Technology, and THON. She also enjoys reading, playing with animals, watching Top Gear, and taking long drive. Olivia loves the feeling of family support within the clarinet studio, as well as the community and challenges of Penn State as a whole. Her favorite teaching moment was teaching marching band fundamentals to a high school marching band of 150 members.


Kaylyn Ebersole (Altoona, PA)
Sophomore, Music Education Symphonic Band, Blue Band
Kaylyn loves being a part of the Clarinet Choir. She had never been in any type of chamber music before and was surprised that twenty of the same instrument could have such a unique sound. She is involved with NAfME and Blue Band THON. She loves being a part of THON each year, and thinks it’s amazing to see a student­ run event do so much good for the community and world. She values all of the fantastic people and wonderful musicians she’s met at Penn State.


Elise Elizondo

So far, Elise’s favorite moment at Penn State has been marching halftime with the Penn State Blue Band. She likes watching TV, eating, sleeping, reading, and doing crafts. She has enjoyed being in clarinet choir this semester because she enjoys getting to play with other people that love and are good at playing clarinet. She loves the atmosphere at Penn State and is involved with CR2 and Global Brigades.


Julia Grossmann (Basking Ridge, NJ)

Julia’s favorite musical experience was getting to play the music to Hans Gal’s (mostly unpublished) chamber work “What A Life!” on a friend’s honors thesis recital. She is involved in NAfME, NBA, and Westminster Presbyterian Fellowship (WPF), and balances her activities with her love of baseball (especially the Mets). Her favorite thing about Penn State is the sense of community and unity in every aspect of campus life, and her favorite thing about the clarinet studio is that everybody wants each other to be successful and happy.

Andy is involved with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia on campus, but also enjoys Netflix, cats, and food. He loves the clarinet studio because it feels like family, and everyone is very supportive. Penn State is a good fit for him because the he thinks the faculty is knowledgeable, have wonderful connections in their various fields, and are very supportive and encouraging. His most memorable musical experience thus far was performing Maslanka’s 4th symphony at his undergrad.


Katie Kimmel (Mount Pleasant, PA)

Katie’s favorite musical experience was participating in the 2014 NAfME All­National concert band and performing at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. She enjoys cats, memes, and coloring. She really enjoys being part of a studio that seems so caring and supportive and working with people who share similar interest and goals. She looks forward to having some great experiences at Penn State.



Sarah Kochis (Cranberry Township, PA)

Symphonic Band, Campus Orchestra, Wind Quintet
Sarah loves being able to play in so many varied ensembles. She is involved with NBA, and NAfMe, and is vice president of the Arts and Architecture Special Living Option. She loves the clarinet studio because it’s an extended family wherein everybody is really supportive and helpful, and loves Penn State because of how friendly the people can be. Outside of music, Sarah likes to crochet, read, hangout with animals, watch movies, and take naps.


Kate Landis (Winfield, PA)

Kate loves the supportiveness and energy of the clarinet studio! Her favorite thing about Penn State is being involved in the Blue Band and Thespians (an organization that puts on plays or musicals every semester). She is also involved with NAfME. Kate is passionate about musical theater and teaching, and enjoys running. Her favorite musical experience was being involved in outer dimensions last semester.


Nate Love (Cambridge Springs, PA)

Thus far, Nathan has enjoyed playing with the symphonic band and having one ­on one time with Dr. Costa in his lessons. He has enjoyed entering the clarinet studio as a freshman because it gave him connections with others who are serious about music performance. Aside from his interests of video games, Ultimate Frisbee, and video editing, he is involved with FSAE (building a formula one race car), MEP (Multicultural Engineering Program, and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers).

Blue Band
Olivia enjoys studying, reading, and going to other events on campus. While holding two part­time jobs, she is also involved with SPSEA (Penn State’s chapter of the statewide educators association). She loves the traditions and atmosphere of Penn State’s campus and school, and likes that the members of the clarinet studio are always happy for each other’s musical and personal achievements. Her favorite teaching experience was attending and teaching at the Philadelphia Urban Seminar.

Sam likes the fact that he could meet new people at Penn State every day for the rest of his academic career and still not have scratched the surface. Within the studio, he loves that the studio is filled with a bunch of amazing people who all care about each other. His most memorable music experience so far has been marching his first pregame at Beaver Stadium. Pursuing majors in both Physics and Economics, Sam is involved with the Society of Physics Students.

Ryan’s favorite thing about Penn State is the immense amount of opportunities available to students and the incredible forensic program it has. He also loves the clarinet studio because it is a group of players who truly strive to do their best and who all share the same love for the clarinet. Outside of music, he is interested in sketching, chemistry, and theology, and is involved with The Navigators (Christian campus ministry) and Forensic Science Special Living Option. His favorite musical experience so far has been attending the Single Reed Summit last year.

As a graduate student, Anthony greatly values the dedication of the faculty and students within the school of music, and appreciates that Penn State has a campus spirit like no other (WE ARE!). As an active member of the Catholic Campus Ministry, he is grateful that all faith­-based organizations on campus have many opportunities for all students (undergrad and graduate) to make friends and grow in their spiritual lives. He has had many memorable musical experiences, but is extremely excited to have the opportunity to perform Dana Wilson’s clarinet concerto, “Liquid Ebony,” with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Anthony is Second Clarinetist with the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra.

Emily is involved with NAfME, Encore THON, and the Dancer Relations THON Committee (a committee that supports the 780 people that dance at THON weekend to raise money for childhood cancer). Outside of music, she likes food, fitness, sports, and outdoor activities. Her favorite thing about Penn State is the sense of community and family. Last year, she really enjoyed the opportunity to teach music to preschool students at the Hort Woods Center.

Abby’s favorite thing about Penn State is that the faculty clearly love their jobs, and that all the students all have a unique reason for being at Penn State. She is involved with NAfME and loves books, movies, service work, art, and owls. Her favorite teaching experience occurred when she was teaching a song to 3rd graders at a local elementary school. She asked the students a question and was prepared to provide guidance to help them get the answer, but the boy who answered understood immediately. She loves being surprised and awed by how much young kids are able to understand and accomplish.

Emily is involved with NAfME, NBA, and Blue Band Bible Study. Her favorite thing about Penn State is the community and the endless opportunities both musically and in every other area of the university. And, she loves that, within the clarinet studio, she gets to work with supportive, kind, loving, and incredibly talented friends every day. Her favorite musical experience is one she gets to experience every week, being in rehearsals.

Liza enjoys traveling, cooking, running, and going to PSU sporting events (and the Creamery!). Her favorite teaching experience so far has been serving as a camp counselor at a middle school music camp this past summer. She is involved with NAfME, NBA, and Encore THON. She values the bonds she has with her fellow studio members, because everyone is always supporting each other and helping each other out. She loves hanging out with the studio and having fun and likes that, by playing music together, everyone in the studio becomes a better musician.
