ICA Orchestral Excerpt Competition Results!

In a competition that featured a professor, doctoral candidates, and a professional musician as finalists, junior Eddie Sundra played his clarinet to a second place win in the Orchestral Excerpt Competition at the International Clarinet Association Conference, held in Lincoln, Nebraska, August 1-5, 2012.

Success in an international competition didn’t come quickly or easily for Penn State student Edward Sundra.
After years of practicing the clarinet, Sundra (junior-music performance) was able to take his talent to the stage in Lincoln, Neb. this past summer to perform in the competition that would lead him to his “biggest achievement so far.”

SWE Concertro Competition Winners!

Senior B.M. clarinet student Eddie Sundra has been named a winner of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s Concerto Competition. He will perform “Riffs for Lenny” from Frank Ticheli’s Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble. From Media, Pennsylvania, Eddie is a student of Anthony Costa.

Spring Award Winners Announced!

The Penn State School of Music's annual Spring Scholarship Competition was held February 24 in Esber Recital Hall. Five current students were awarded significant scholarships based on performance, and three graduating students received awards recognizing their cumulative achievements in the school.

APG Scholarship Winner!

Junior B.M.E. student Allison Long has been named as the recipient of the School of Music Alumni Interest Group Scholarship (APG) for the fall 2013 semester. She is a clarinet student of Anthony Costa.

SWE Concerto Competition Winners!

Senior B.M.E. bass clarinetist Erica Wilt has been chosen as one of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s Concerto Competition winners this year. She will be performing on the ensemble’s April 25 concert, playing As If by Patrice Sciortino.

Brewster Scholarship Winners!

Brooke Miller, a senior in the Bachelor of Music Education program, and Laura Brown, a senior in the Integrated Undergraduate-Graduate degree program, were recently awarded the Marjorie Jane Brewster Memorial Music Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the Penn State School of Music.

Graduate Exhibition Results!

Placing third was the graduate woodwind quintet "Quintessential." They played the first movement of György Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles, “Le bal” from Jeux d’enfants, Op. 22 by George Bizet, and the first movement of Kleine Kammermusik, Op. 24 by Paul Hindemith. Members of Quintessential are Laura Clapper, flute; Hope Licciardello, clarinet; Kelsey Fish, oboe; Brian Nagle, bassoon; and Drew Welkie, horn. The quintet is coached by Timothy Hurtz and Robyn Costa.

Brewster Scholarship Winners!

Seniors John Livingston (B.M.A.) and Eddie Sundra (B.M.) have been named the winners of the Marjorie Jane Brewster Memorial Music Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the Penn State School of Music. Created in memory of Marjorie Jane Brewster (’61 B.A. Arts) by her father, the scholarship is awarded based on competition to selected undergraduates in their final year of study who wish to pursue advanced degrees.
