Course Description

Spanish 1 classes assume no prior knowledge of Spanish, but students with limited exposure to the language may also be placed into this first level. The course will begin with learning basic vocabulary for telling time; describing people, home, and the classroom; dates; days of the week; months of the year; etc. We will also talk about student life and Penn State using pronouns, the present tense, colors, and food words. Students will work their wayup from using regular verbs to mastering the most common types of irregular verbs and being able to correctly distinguish some verbs that frequently give English speakers trouble (e.g. two verbs meaning "to be" and two meaning "to know").

Students will spend the equivalent of two classes per week working through vocabulary and grammar activities, and class time will focus on employing the new material through written and oral practice. Classroom activities and group work will incorporate and play off of the real-life activities, interests, personalities, and experiences of the students. Emphasis in class will be placed on effective and fluid communication, which will build upon previous material.
