Why You so Obsessed With Me?

Since I have the E! News app on my phone I always get updates sent right to my phone of the latest celebrity news. Sometimes I just scourer the internet looking for what the latest celebrity news is and it's made me thing why are we so obsessed with what celebrities do? With Keeping Up with the Kardashians, E! News, TMZ, and any other reality TV show or entertainment news company we are constantly seeing the lives of what celebrities are up to. With social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram we are given an in depth view of celebrity lives constantly.

According to anthropologist, Jamie Tehrani, this obsessing with knowing all about celebrities has a lot to do with our evolutionary past. He believes our obsession may be the result of our brains not being able to catch up with modern times. This concept relates to our obsession with fast food, during the cavemen days, they would eat high calorie food since they needed to survive. Our celebrity interest may be caused by our ancient brains thinking we need to respect the leader of the pack or anyone seen as being a creative innovator.

Before celebrities, people looked up to monarchs for social and fashion cues, so we have been obsessed with anyone who is more popular than us years before entertainment news networks and even television. Daniel Kruger, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan says we might be so addicted to celebrities so we can learn what these high status individuals do so we might become one, another reason is more political. Knowing if Amanda Bynes got out of rehab recently is something we think we need to know in order to socially interact with people.

I constantly follow celebrities on Twitter and Instagram and have always wondered why I care so deeply about an actor or actress that I don't even know. After doing research on why people are addicted to knowing what celebrities are doing in their day to day lives is something I think we need to socialize with people we see in our own lives. How many times have I talked to someone about an actor or actress to someone over what he or she may have worn or won recently? We all have our favorite actor or actress that we think is attractive and constantly need to know what they're doing as if that information is one day going to help us!

According to another anthropologist, we follow celebrities because we copy the traits that made them successful. In our past this was helpful when the skills involved things like hunting, but in the day and age of people being worship for being skinny or for putting out a sex tape this can and does have negative consequences for our society. We need to have better role models that are celebrities.

I do the exact same things. Even though I would rather not be, I am absolutely obsessed with pop-culture. I constantly see celebs upon celebs popping up on my Instagram feed. What's even more disturbing, is that half of the celebrity figures that I follow are nowhere near being "role models". Here is an interesting opinion by Social anthropologist Jamie Tehrani on the science of the celebrity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF-_V8IhJuA

I think it is pretty interesting that you chose to take a perspective of science on why we chose to treat celebrities like celebrities. If one were to type in on google why we treat celebrities as gods, you would recieve over 92 MILLION results. To me, that is absurd. I think that Kathleen made a huge point when she pointed out that we might try to be copycats and do what they do. This makes complete sense because the reason clothing trends and other fashion trends exist is because we perceve to be a certain person as the alpha and leader of that trend. If Beyonce were to wear a certain type of top, there would be a huge following of girls that would go buy that top. According to Celebrity addition experts, the reasons we so sheepishly follow these celebs is because of the incredible advertising and marketing of these people that we are constantly bombarded by. It is almost as if it is a given in society. It is engraved in us.
