In 1992, Sir Mix-A-Lot said: "I like big butts and I cannot lie" in his epic hip-hop chart topper, Baby Got Back. Twenty-one years later, this prose is still poignant. I, myself have a big butt, and I cannot lie; I love my big butt!

In our society that puts so much emphasis on physical appearance, it is a struggle to promote body positivity, especially in girls and young women. I have struggled with physical insecurities in my life, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't still. That being said, myself and the many beautiful people like me, have a new reason to love our curvy shapes!

The popular news source published an article last week revealing a study that shows that women with junk in the trunk are not only typically healthier, but are smarter and live longer too! If you weren't proud of your caboose before, get excited! All of us big booty b*tches can celebrate our good fortune and our glutei maximi!

The British study gives evidence that suggests that bootylicious ladies are better off. Scientists at the universities of Oxford, California, and Pittsburgh have conducted similar studies that all pointed to these findings. The results of the studies show that women with bigger tushies tend to have lower levels of cholesterol and are more likely to produce hormones to metabolize sugar. This means that women with badonkadonks are less likely to have diabetes or heart problems! Go us! For me that means one thing to worry about. Of course I am going to be concerned with my health, but knowing that my lucious body is already protecting me against some illnesses definitely makes me feel better about my over all health. Having a big butt also reportedly favors high leptin levels in the female body, which according to Professor Konstantinos Manolopoulos, who leads the team at the University of Oxford, is a hormone responsible for regulating the weight, and the dinopectina (a hormone with anti-inflammatory, vascular-protective and anti-diabetic attributes) because the surplus of tissue in the buttocks traps harmful fatty particles and prevents cardiovascular disease. So heart-healthy ladies can thank their money-makers for their good health!

Sean Levinson, wrote that "having a big butt requires an excess of Omega 3 fats, which have been proven to catalyze brain development". This is the part that tells us that curvy women are smarter. Levinson also shares that the scientists found that the children born to women with wider frames, and thus larger rear ends, are more intellectually advanced than the children of bottomly-challenged mothers. If this is true, then I have my mother to thank for my academic aptitude (I take after her- if you know what I mean).

Scientists at the University of Oxford engaged 16,000 women in an observational experiment where their buns were measured along with medical records and IQ tests. This data shows a correlation between good health, intelligence and the size of a woman's tuchus!I want to mention the leptin level theory. Manolopoulos says the high levels of leptin should regulate weight in the female body.

I wish that this was explained further, because this study appears to make sense, but of course there are possible third variables and whatnot to skew the results. What I think this study explicitly refers to is women with slight figures and big butts. I say this because I have a rather large bottom and a heavier build, but even though I am technically 'obese' my heart health is perfect, my cholesterol levels are wonderfully normal, and my risk for diabetes seems to be low as of late. I cannot speak to my own intelligence, but I like to think that I am a rather witty person who is typically 'with it'. Even when I was younger and technically 'normal weight', my buttocks were still rather large in proportion to the rest of my body.

Everything I have learned about nutrition and diet has taught me that having more fat stores on my body is nothing but detrimental to my health, but this study seems to contradict all of  that. Maybe this was 'file-drawered' until recently. Or maybe there are errors in the study. Or as anything can be, maybe these results were found by chance.

Whatever the case may be, I think this is another way to promote body positivity! As I said before, many women and girls struggle with body image issues and most ladies with big butts are ashamed, embarrassed, or disatisfied with their backsides. This is another way we can encourage people to love their shapes no matter what!

Anyway, now I have a few new reason to love my body and be proud of what my mama gave me!

This article caught my attention because I know a lot of girls struggle with body image. Especially with all the magazines and photoshop that portray women to look different than they actually appear to be. It is so hard for young girls to grow up with all the media portraying women in a different light because that's what they think they're supposed to look like. I thought it was interesting that you said women with larger butts scientifically have a longer life span. I decided to look this up a little more. In the article, Why a big butt may help you live longer, it discusses how women are "programmed" to think that if they have bigger assets they are prone to heart disease, but this is in fact not proved or clear. Konstantinos Manolopoulus, a writer for the International Journal of Obesity, states, "It is the protective role of lower body, that is, gluteofemoral fat, that is striking." Fat on the bottom and thighs appears to store excess fatty acids, said Manolopoulos, who reviewed published scientific studies for his report.

I think this article is great because it allows women to embrace their own bodies. With so many stick thin women being hi-lighted in society, many women feel uncomfortable with their body already. I had never heard about any of the studies you explained but I find them quite interesting. I am shocked at the fact that having a larger "bottom" can make you heart healthier. If anything, I would have suspected the opposite just because of people always watching their weight. I was also shocked to hear that women with larger butts have longer lifespans! I would be interested to see the variables attached to this study. What exactly makes these women live longer than women with smaller butts? I researched this a good bit and came across an article about Ghanian women that I found really interesting. These women are known to be curvier than women in other countries. They actually shape their children with beads from the time they are little to achieve the curvy shape they have! They connected these women to the Univeristy of Oxford study that you were talking about which I found to be interesting! To read more about these women check out this link!
