Benefits of Biotin!

Before I started college I worked at a hair salon, and soon into working there I became obsessed with all things related to beauty products. Whether it was the latest keratin treatment, manicure, or ombre hair style, I just ate, slept, and breathed the salon atmosphere. When I was done working there, it became hard to afford those every four week trims to keep my hair healthy. It was when I began to skip months without a trim that I noticed my hair become very unhealthy, straggly etc. A professional cosmetologist then suggested to me that I take biotin which is a vitamin that strengthens your hair, skin, and nails.

So I have been taking biotin for quite a while, and it may be just inside my head, but my hair has been growing fast, and my nails are looking extremely healthy. Is this just a coincidence?

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center gives a synopsis about the vitamin Biotin. Biotin comes from the vitamin B family, which is necessary to create healthy hair and nails. Biotin is also used to help your body convert carbohydrates into glucose. This means that biotin will give your body more energy. The article did not give any negative side effects from Biotin, only that you must take it in moderation.

I agree that biotin is definitely a great vitamin to take when you want your hair or nail to grow faster and stronger. I was looking around though and I found some side effects to biotin. This one article states that biotin, "may have side effects such as mild nausea, stomach cramping, or diarrhea.” Are these side effects really worth having stronger hair? I personally do not think that taking vitamins is risky but others may disagree. I also wonder that if further research was done, would they find that there are more serious side effects to continually taking biotin or is it possible to over-dose on this vitamin?

I have been taking a Vitamin B Complex with biotin in it daily for about a year. I have already seen the results. I started because I had a 60 pound weight loss, which was a shock to my system. This vitamin made me so much more healthier that it was incredible. Why don't more people take it? Heres an interesting article:

Victoria, I checked out your link, and found not very convincing evidence of negative side effects. The only one that I saw was the nausea, or diarrhea which I have yet to experience with my biotin intake. That may depend upon how much you take of a dosage although. Other than that it seems like a perfectly safe, effective vitamin. Have you come across anything that may confirm the risky side effects?

Wow Jesse, how did the biotin specifically help you after your incredible weight loss? Congratulations btw! I found your article (
extremely interesting when I saw that acne could be a side effect, specifically along the jaw line/chin. I have been breaking out on my chin for a while now, when I have never had any problem with acne before. This is crazy and am wondering if they have anything in common, acne and my biotin intake. I am tempted to stop taking it to see if it improves. I will let ya know!

I've always heard of Biotin helping with the growth of nails and hair, but I've always been hesitant to try it because of the fear that it will make other hair grow on my body like my arms! I feel like my arm hair is long enough and I definitely don't want it to grow any longer. However, with all of the uncertainty about the positive/negative side effects of taking Biotin, I don't think it's worth taking. Instead, I think eating a variety of these foods is a much healthier and natural way to corporate more Biotin into a diet and it's worth trying!
