I was always told that bananas were "good for you" and I never argued with this because they are a fruit and all fruits are healthy right? It turns out that bananas have so many more benefits to them that I would have never imagined. I'm sure most of you have heard that bananas help prevent and soothe muscle cramps. This is true due to the fact that bananas have high levels of potassium in them. Lactic acid is what produces cramps and a way to get rid of lactic acid is with potassium. Eating bananas before or after workouts will help to both prevent and get rid of muscle cramps.

Besides fighting cramps, bananas have so many other important uses. They have been found to temporarily cure depression. "According to a recent survey by the National Association of Mental Health, people suffering from depression felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier." This is why bananas are also able to control PMS symptoms. They contain vitamin B-6 which regulates blood glucose levels and affects your mood. Because bananas are high in potassium but extremely low in salt they are proven to beat high blood pressure and are a perfect snack for someone who has high blood pressure. The potassium also helps to make you "smarter" by making you more alert. Students who regularly eat bananas before and during school have been shown to have better grades. Because they are high in fiber, they can also help constipation naturally instead of having to resort to laxatives. Bananas are an antacid which will counteract heartburn and stop it from happening. The best hangover cure involves bananas. "One of the quickest ways of recovering from a hangover is to drink Banana-Apple Smoothie, sweetened with honey. Add a few ice cubes, and you're in for a real treat. The banana calms the stomach and the honey builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the freshly extracted apple juice soothes and re-hydrates your system." It's pretty clear that eating a banana is a good idea. But, there are a ton of other uses for bananas that don't even involve actually eating them. The peels have been proven to whiten teeth. If you rub them on before you brush your teeth you could save a lot of money. Crest white strips are around 40 dollars a box, Bananas are less than a dollar at the dining commons. I have heard many things in regards to bananas being healthy but I never knew it goes to that extent! The ways bananas affect your health are endless and I appreciate you sharing them with me. I knew bananas help with cramps and periods, but never did I know that it helps with mood, grades and even teeth! I've heard orange peels help whiten your teeth because of the acidity found in them, but banana peels are definitely a new one to me. Unfortunately, Bananas aren't all that great. After some research, I found that the fruit can also have some negative affects on the body-such as heart problems and drowsiness. Here's the article, check it out!

It's so cool that you could whiten your teeth with a banana peel! I knew that bananas were really good for you, though that fact was news to me. Although bananas have many benefits, eating underripe ones could actually be bad for you. I found an article that says that underripe bananas are harder for your body to digest meaning it will sit in your large intestine where bacteria will create gas and discomfort. However, you still get the same health benefits from an underripe banana, so the choice is yours as to whether or not you want to deal with the pain!

Thanks for the article.I wasn't aware bananas' health benefits were this numerous. On other interesting facts about bananas, it occurred to me that bananas are actually one of few, if not only, fruits which are not juicy. Or are they? They are 80% water according to the article below but their molecules are structured in a different way that makes them unsqueezable. Also, researchers in India aim to extract the juice from bananas through nuclear science http://americanexpatchiangmai.com/strange-facts-about-the-banana/

Personally I love bananas and would eat them after every workout when I played soccer. I also eat them in morning as breakfast because they are so healthy and a good way to start my day. To be honest I've heard that bananas have a lot of sugar in them so i shouldn't eat them as much, but after reading your article that just went out the door. I'll definitely keep eating bananas as much as I want! And according to whole foods says it's even the healthiest food! http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=7

Bananas are one of my all time favorite fruits! They can be used in so many things! However, my favorite way to eat a banana is with some good, creamy peanut butter. It is the perfect snack that makes me feel full and not extremely tired. I remember one time I pulled my calf muscle very bad and my mom told me to eat a banana and the next day it felt so much better! My cross country coach always used to tell us to eat bananas because he didn't want us to cramp up during a race. I found a really great video on youtube that talks about the Top 10 Health Benefits of Bananas, check it out!

I found myself having to read this post just off the strength that I do not like bananas at all. I know they are healthy, but I just don't like the taste or the smell of them. People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them this, but hey, this is a judge free zone. This was a very informal post by the way. I would have never guessed that bananas have this many positive effects. I'm most intrigued by the fact that bananas can temporarily cure depression. Maybe I'll peel a banana after every science test from now on. If there's truly a correlation between eating bananas and better grades, I may have to force myself to like them haha.

According to leanitup.com, bananas clock in at #28 on it's list of the healthiest fruits on earth! Click the link to read the full list, their analysis, and nutrition score of each fruit.

I am not a banana lover through an through but I have come to enjoy eating them before a long run to keep my energy levels up and not feel too full. According to shape.com, bananas are even better than sports drinks. They stated,"In addition to providing antioxidants not found in sports drinks, they (bananas) pack more nutrients and a healthier blend of natural sugars." However for someone trying to lose weight or watch their waistline, bananas might not be the best choice because they have more carbs than any fruit. You can read more about the article here,http://www.shape.com/blogs/weight-loss-coach/why-you-shouldn%E2%80%99t-ditch-bananas. I also came across Colgate's website which states that high fiber fruits are good for dental health but apples, oranges and blueberries work just as well and help with gum health. That information is found here, http://www.colgate.com/app/CP/US/EN/OC/Information/Articles/ADA/2012/article/ADA-04-Consumer-News-High-fiber-fruits-and-healthy-gums.cvsp

Bananas are the way to go! In high school I would always eat at least a banana for breakfast. I always find it funny how they can help with depression because a banana looks like a smile haha. I mean bananas are just so good that they made halloween costumes out of them..
