Does Biotin Really Help my Hair Grow?

When I was little, my mother always told me, "God made you with long hair." In her mind, this would convince me never to cut my hair. Well, it worked. Brainwashed into believing that I was always supposed to have long hair, I became obsessed with wanting it to grow longer and longer. Aside from wanting my hair to be long, I also wanted it to be blonde. However, if you know anything about hair, you know that bleaching your hair kills it, and if you kill your hair, it won't grow. You could imagine the position I was in; I had long, blonde hair with two inches of split ends on the bottom. Not exactly my ideal hairstyle.

Of course my mother noticed my dead ends, but what was she going to say? She certainly wasn't going to tell me to cut it. That one I came up with on my own. She was absolutely horrified at the thought of me getting two inches cut off of my hair, but it just had to be done.  I was becoming comparable to a Raggedy Ann doll.

Lost without direction, I Googled "How to make my hair grow." I found a lot of interesting concoctions (that I would never actually try own my own hair), but then I also found an all-natural supplement to make my hair grow. It's called Biotin. I had nothing to lose, so I decided to just try it.

Now, looking back on my off and on relationship with Biotin, my hair looks healthier and feels thicker than it did half a decade ago. Even though my hair looks great, I can't help but wonder if this is all in my head. Is my hair actually healthier, longer, and prettier? Or am I convincing myself that my hair is healthier, longer, and prettier because I'm using Biotin, and Biotin is "supposed" to make my hair like that?

Apparently, I did the right thing. According to About.com, by taking Biotin on a daily basis, on can increase the growth rate in hair. You won't look like Rapunzel overnight, but after about a month or so your hair will be both thicker and longer. It turns out that Biotin can also increase nail and eyelash growth. It's good to know that I'm not wasting my money. I really want my hair to grow another two inches, so I'll keep taking the Biotin. Wish me luck.

I have been complaining for months now that my hair will not grow! I went to my hairdresser and she said my split ends were so bad I just needed it cut and it should start growing after that. Well, it hasn't whatsoever and I am so puzzled. I even starting using Long Lengths shampoo, but I don't think it is doing anything so this post literally made my day! I will totally try this out! Thanks!

Hi Laurel,

I LOVE biotin! I started using it around this time last year. My friend has the most beautiful long, thick and shiny hair and after asking her how she does it she answered, biotin! At first, I was very hesitant because like you, I'd looked up many ways to grow my hair and all of them seemed a bit sketchy. However, I went out and bought biotin and after about two months I noticed a big change in my hair. I also use lengthening shampoo and conditioner. My hair is now much longer and healthier. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who really believes in this miracle supplement!

Laurel , I m having the same issue ! I had long hair that went all the way down my back! I loved it so much but I decided to cut it super short one day. It looked really good but I really missed my long locks . Its been 4 years since I cut it and I still am not anywhere near where it used to be :( I also did ombre to the ends of it last spring break and I am sure that didn't help anything ...haha I really want it to be long again so I am going to try biotin ! It sounds like it works pretty well! Thanks for the advice!

Laurel, Its great to hear that you take care of your hair. I always hear so many people talking about how they hate their hair. Like your mom said, "God made you with long hair." I found this article where some people seem to think that biotin causes acne. After reading it, that statement is definitely specific to each individual person, but turns out that it is highly unlikely. So, if anyone says (for some reason) that biotin causes acne. You can show them this to let them know the facts!
