Mean Girls: Everyone's Obsession!

friend-funny-lol-mean-girls-meme-favim-com-254785.jpgI am obsessed with Mean Girls.

It is legitimately my favorite movie of all times. It is the epitome of every teenage girls' life. Seriously the most relatable movie ever made!

For those of you who have been living under a rock, Mean Girls is about a girl named Cady who moves to the suburbs of Illinois to start a new life with her family. She was home schooled her whole life, but upon arriving in the US, she decided  to go to public school. On her first day, she was a total outcast. However, the beautiful redhead makes friends with Janice and Damian, a duo who is not very popular after a few days. Janice is very tough and rough around the edges and Damian is a gay student full of life. They take Cady under their wing until she goes to lunch and accidentally meets Regina George and the rest of "The Plastics". They invite her to eat lunch with them which eventually leads to her joining their mini sorority-like group.

The Plastics are known in school as the hot and popular girls. Everyone knows them, loves them and envy them. They have a "Burn Book" where they write mean things about all the girls in school, they shop and gossip and pick at their flaws like everyone else.

When Cady tells Damien and Janice of the good news of The Plastics, they convince her to turn against Regina because she isn't a nice girl. Cady eventually sees her through their eyes and starts sabotaging her life by doing things like give her weight gaining bars, to hooking up with her ex boyfriend to turning her friends against her.

Regina eventually catches on to Cady's actions and turns against her by blaming her for the Burn Book. Aaron Samuels, who was Regina's ex and Cady's new love interest finds out about her actions and ends up cutting her off. The other two Plastics and Cady get in trouble as Regina enjoys her victory. Sadly for her, she ends up getting hit by a bus. As her punishment for the Burn Book, Cady has to go to the Mathletes meet instead of the Spring Fling but because of her they end up winning.

After the meet, Cady goes to the Fling where she makes up with Aaron and they end up dating for a bit before he goes off to college. Regina's injury leads her in a path where she can channel her negative and aggressive feelings by joining sports and the Plastics finally find their own identities.

TA-DA the end. It is much more interesting than I made it out to be, but that was the quickest recap I could come up with! Don't kill me if I skipped over some things, I could go on forever.

Anyway, you will often experience girls quoting Mean Girls like it is their job! Anything from

  • She doesn't even go here!
  • Boo, you w****!
  • I'm sorry that people are so jealous of me... but I can't help it that I'm so popular.
  • So, if you are from Africa...why are you white?
  • Do you want to go to Taco Bell?
  • Get in loser, we are going shopping.
  • That is so fetch!
  • On Wednesdays we wear pink!
  • Don't have sex because you will get pregnant and die

And the list could go on and on.

So if you are like me, you have seen the movie more times than you have ever switched cell phones. And now a days that is pretty common because they break so easily. But why are we so obsessed with this movie?

I would say mostly because it is so relatable, funny and teaches girls a lesson about the crucial teen years! It gets the point across about:

  • peer pressure
  • safe sex and STDs (besides the teacher spelling chlamydia with a "k")
  • bullying
  • how to fit in
  • boys
  • embracing your culture

and most importantly,

  • how to deal with girls

Mean Girls is a movie that has impacted viewers, the actors (some doing very well like "dumb" Karen, who now has more successful movies than Lindsay Lohan, and Rachel McAdams), and the American culture over all. I mean, even our President Barack Obama's family has quoted Mean Girls in a recent picture of their family dog and by sharing a GIF of Cady saying the date October 3rd. That is big, peeps!

I couldn't find any research on why we love this particular movie so much, but I did find an article that I agree with in their saying that "the movies are a picture window onto a world that never existed". This is so true, because it allows us to experience something that we may not be able to. Like, a full on Regina George getting hit by a bus! Another study shows that "memorable phrases contain generic pearls of wisdom expressed with unusual combinations of words in ordinary sentences." This again, is so true in my eyes because even though the quotes in Mean Girls are fairly causal, they have a strong message behind them!

Whether you agree or not, Mean Girls is such an awesome movie because it sticks with you and you never get sick of it. It was released almost ten years ago, yes 2004, let that sit in on how "old" we feel now, and it is still played frequently on many TV channels.

Here are some fun things and mistakes you may have never caught before that will for sure make this movie even funnier! Enjoy and don't forget "You go Glen Coco!"

I used to love mean girls but kind off forgot about it as you mentioned its old and it's making me feel old to even think about it right now. The controversy about this movie was that people said it influenced kids in a way it shouldn't have. The whole burn book concept and language and everything else. Personally for me I remember movies only while I watch them and so it didn't have such a huge impact. My question would be how does something that runs for 1.5 hours and is not even real have the ability to influence and great such a huge impact in our lives that we remember it more than 8 years later when I barely can remember what I ate for lunch today?

I think it influences because it is something we can relate to. If you don't like it, that is fine but some of us do and it is something we reference from day to day. I think it is just like with relationships, it is something we click with.
