Legalize it

2.2 million Americans suffer from the eye disease Glaucoma. Of these 2.2 million, it is estimated that over half them are completely unaware that they even have it. Of these 2.2 million, over 100,000 of these people have gone blind due to the disease. According to the National Eye Institute, "Studies in the early 70's showed that the use of marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma." (cited here) While this in and of itself is not enough to legalize a commonly used recreational drug, there are multitudes of other benefits, such as sleep improvement, preventing nausea, treating chemotherapy patients, reducing cancer risks, and relieving aches and pains.

In addition, the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, according to Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Janda has also found evidence that marijuana use can ease the pain of multiple sclerosis. According to a study done by Jody Corey-Bloom (cited here), patients were shown to be in significantly less pain after smoking marijuana than after undergoing any other treatment.

Yes, Marijuana is a recreational drug that is used and abused by many people. "Stoners" and "potheads" wreak "havoc" on society by eating large amounts of food, offering insight on life, and being all around lazy. People that abuse the substance are often those that did not have the drive to succeed in life anyway and use their pot use as an excuse. Many renowned philosophers were admitted marijuana users, and it is rumored that even 2 of our presidents, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, grew Marijuana plants at their homes. In addition to all of the scientific reasons for legalizing, if the government sold marijuana the way that places like Amsterdam do, they would receive a tax stipend and it would boost local economies that housed shops that sold marijuana.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) runs in my family, so naturally I am eagerly awaiting a cure so I am not one day sitting in a diaper while my nurse feeds me liquid meat. I found several articles, including this one (found at bottom of comment) that indicate that marijuana can slow and possibly even prevent Alzheimer's. I hope to that more research is done, but from the articles I read, marijuana seems like it helps very much. To anyone else that has AD running in their veins, LETS SMOKE SOME POT.
