Women and Viagra

So, you have always heard about men taking Viagra to boost their performance, but what about women? Can women's sexual arousal be improved in any way? Are there any requirements that women must fulfill before they are able to take Viagra? To answer these questions, this is what I found.

A 2004 study led by "sexual function gurus" Jennifer R. Berman, MD and Laura A. Berman, PhD  revealed that post-menopausal women showed an improvement in sex when they took Viagra. 202 women who were post-menopausal and were diagnosed with female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) - "distress from an inability to attain or maintain sexual excitement" - were placed in a "placebo-controlled" experiment.  After being randomly allocated into two groups - placebo and non-placebo - both groups found improvements but overall it was more common in the group that took Viagra. Moreover, it was found that women who not only have FSAD but hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) - women who have emotional problems that result in loss of sexual desire - did not see any improvements whatsoever.

As a disclaimer, the authors made it clear that for the Viagra to have any effect on women "they may need to have normal levels of estrogen and testosterone". Also for women that are postmenopausal, menopausal replacement therapy will be needed to reach these levels of normalcy. They also revealed that the women in this study were in compliance with the disclaimer.

Considering the fact that this study did not produce any significant results, in the sense that it did not produce a clear and clean cut answer as to whether or not women will see an improvement in sexual desire, I decided to look for other answers.

In a similar "placebo controlled" experiment it was found that 72 percent of premenopausal women who were on anti-depressants reported they experienced sexual improvement when they took Viagra. This study was conducted by H. George Nurnberg, MD "a professor at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine in Albuquerque" and Harry A. Croft, MD "medical director of the San Antonio Psychiatric Research Center in Texas" over a period of four years - from 2003 to 2007 - and 98 women were used, less than half in the previous experiment. The result of which caused increased orgasms as well as the time it takes to reach them. However, it did not cause an increase in desire or drive. Surprisingly, men have the same results as women when they take Viagra.

These two studies stressed the importance of having normal levels of testosterone for Viagra to have the full intended effect on the person that uses it. What did strike me as odd was that these studies were funded by the Viagra maker Pfizer. It makes me question the credibility of these findings though I may be over thinking. Both studies arrived at a similar conclusion so I can probably say that the results were credible.

What do you think in regards to the credibility of these findings? Do you know of a female that takes Viagra? Are the effects the same as in the study?
