What does alcohol really do to you?

     We have all experienced it.You go to a party or you get in the bus at a certain time of night at State College and you see many kids acting crazy and loud. We all know the reason why...they are drunk. At college drinking is more prevalent and also easier to find especially Thursday nights-Sunday. You see it everywhere, whether you are going for a late night slice of pizza or taking the bus to a friends dorm. 
     According to a Princeton Study 67% of American adults drink alcohol. That percentage is getting higher year after year. Also the percentage of Americans who are under the age of 21 are drinking more frequently. 
     Everyone knows that drinking under the age of 21 in the United States is illegal. The reason for this is because alcohol affects younger peoples bodies differently than older people. But scientifically, how is it different in a younger person compared to an older person. Well first off, alcohol affects your brain, liver, and kidneys. Your brain and body is still developing until you are 21 so therefore excessive drinking can cause developmental problems. 
     As soon as you take your first sip of alcohol, it immediately is released into your bloodstream. What does this mean for your body? Your brain cannot work the way that is does when you are sober. Although it may take a lot of alcohol for you to "feel drunk", the first sip of alcohol is already affecting your body.
     After you start drinking, your heart starts to beat quicker. Both your heart rate and breathing rate increase. Although many people think that alcohol only affects your liver and maybe your brain, other parts of your body are affected in big ways as well. For example, your digestive system.The alcohol that you are drinking is absorbed into the stomach which can cause irritation to the stomach lining. Alcohol also increases blood flow to the skin.
     Long term drinking can cause brain damage, and also damage to other parts of the body. These facts are not mean to scare people, just state the facts. 
     Alcohol affects everyone in different ways. No two people will react the same exact way after drinking alcohol. A 6 foot 200 pound man will require more alcohol to feel drunk than a 5 foot 5 inches tall 120 pound female. Females typically have a lower alcohol tolerance than males because of their height, weight, and body types.
   So the next time you are thinking about drinking, just remember to be careful. You don't want to permanently damage your body. You never know exactly how alcohol is going to affect you so just pace yourself.

What does alcohol do to us? A lot more than we think, especially after reading this article I realize just what this "liquid" can do. I became interested in this and looked into specifically weight gain from alcohol and found some interesting results. A study done by nutritional dieticians showed that having a mere three ounces of alcohol reduces fat burning by almost 1/3. The amount of calories in one alcoholic drink can lead to weight gain very easily. I found this chart on MedicineNet.com and it shows the amount of calories in different alcoholic beverages...choose wisely i guess...
