So College

Late night Canyon, Grillers, or Taco Bell runs after a fun night out?  During the day the food does not look appetizing one bit.  So why at 2AM does it look and taste better then anything I've ever eaten?

Well even though alcohol contains a lot of calories, it might seem weird that alcohol would make you hungry but for those of us who enjoy a few drinks at night now know that the post-drink "midnight-munchies" is a real phenomenon.  Scientists have pondered this and have conducted experiments that showed that people who had unwittingly ingested alcohol would end up feeling more hungry and eating more sometime within the next three hours.  Based on their research, half a pint wasn't enough to interfere with normal control, but after four pints the ability to regulate food intake went somewhat AWOL-and the drive to eat far exceeds what is needed.

The reason as to why we go crazy for the fatty food after an alcohol indulgence is a more difficult question to answer.  Some scientists have suggested that because alcohol reduces our inhibitions, we are more relaxed about what we eat.  That 'health conscious' part of our brain calms down so we eat what we really want.  Appetite is controlled in the hypothalamus part of the brain.  Alcohol seems to trigger this part of the brain into action - making us crave high calorie food!

This food may taste amazing late at night but eating four grilled cheese or an entire box of pizza with a friend will most likely make your stomach hate you the next morning.  And none of us want to gain the 'freshman fifteen' so even though it may taste good, BE CAREFUL.

Definitely a good topic to cover in college. I make a visit to Are U Hungry way too often. It is weird to think that there is scientific backing to craving these foods, especially for those that are intoxicated. Im really curious as to the chemical reactions that are caused in the brain to make people want these foods. Nothing beats a good slice of pizza though.

Haaa. This was great. I had Are U Hungry sober once....worst mistake of my life! It's interesting to see that there is actual science involved though. I sort of just chalked up the reasoning to the fact that at 3 a.m. nothing else is really open. Then again I don't think anyone has ever offered me a salad at 3 a.m. either..

Late night munchies are definitely a topic to look at while in college. We have all been there; gone out, partied, drank, danced all night, and left feeling like some fatty/salty foods could really taste great right about then. First off, alcohol has a lot of calories in itself. According to a Men's Health article, Spanish researches did an experiment with a group of more than 12,000 people to study their alcohol intake and diet. It was found that excessive drinkers and binge drinkers were least likely to guidelines of eating fruits and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle. They were also more likely to skip breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day.
Apparently alcohol calories are not recognized by the body. Therefore, your body feels less full, although you have taken in many more calories than you think. People do not tend to crave healthy foods when you are drunk; you want salt and fat! According to a study done by Purdue University , that small amount of alcohol can heighten the taste of salts and fats. That is why even Canyon Pizza tastes amazing when you are drunk! But next time you are drunk walking home, remember, will you regret what you are about to order when you wake up in the morning? Are you truly hungry, or is your mouth just craving fats and salts?

this was an awesome article to read about and is very relevant to college life. I always wondered why alcohol gives abusers the need for food and hunger. when you were talking about the hypothlamus, do other parts of the brain help to trigger the stimulative effect or just this part? also would eating before alcohol consumption stop these chemical triggers?

Great topic! For some reason McDonalds always seems like a gourmet meal at 4am going back to my room. What I found extremely interesting was that in this article and what I have heard numerous times, is that greasy food cures hangovers because it breaks up the alcohol in one's body. Now as the article states it works for a hangover. What I want to argue is that, maybe your brain/body is somehow more attracted to the greasy food to break up the alcohol in one's system. Now that may be completely false, but an interesting view point.

Yeah great topic! I always wonder why drinkers were always hungry after they had consumed alcohol. But i dont know i think it could be more factors than the alcohol that cause them to be hungry. I mean i know people who dont even drink and still have the muchies at night.
