Science and Me

Well hello there everyone! I guess I'd better start by introducing myself. My name is Kathleen, and I'm excited to be a freshman here at Penn State! I'm from the small town of Milford, Pennsylvania, a place of which I'm sure most of you have never heard. I'm currently majoring in English here at Penn State, although I am thinking about switching (already) to international politics. I have always had a great interest in the liberal arts; I adore reading, writing, culture, travel, and discussing those things about which I am passionate. I suppose this is one of the reasons that I am not a science major, but it is not the main reason.

I'll never say that I hate science, because I don't. I find certain aspects of science fascinating, like how the human body works, or learning about different theories about time and space. I think it's amazing how small and insignificant we seem, and how little we know about science and how much more there is to be discovered. However, there  is this little thing called math, which seems to be perpetually connected with science. And unfortunately, math and I do not mix. At all. Which leaves me in a sad place, because I love science, and I love to discuss different ideas and theories, but when it comes down to to the technical part, I am quite awful at it.

This is partially why I took this class. I of course took it to fill my gen ed requirement, but I also took it because it seemed like the type of class that was made for me. Almost like someone took a peek inside my head and said: "Well golly gee, Kathleen Forichon would love a class like this!" So I know I sound like a total nerd when I say this, but I am extremely excited for this upcoming semester, and I can't wait to see what is in store for this class!

I mentioned that I love to travel, and last summer I went to Suriname, a small country in South America. Here's a picture I took in one of the villages I visited!

Hey Kathleen! I think it's so cool that you traveled to South America! Next year I really want to study abroad and I'm considering Argentina! Is that one of the countries you went to? I've heard it's amazing- especially going to see Patagonia! http://www.patagonia-argentina.com/en/

That's awesome! I actually went to Suriname, it's a really small country north of Brazil, next to Guyana. But Argentina definitely sounds like a cool place to go!
