Science and I don't really get along...

Hey SC 200, my name is Kelly Hackenbrack and I am a sophomore here at the greatest university in the world! I hail from Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, a suburb about thirty minutes outside of the City of Brotherly Love. I am in the College of Communication and I plan on majoring in Public Relations with a possible double minor of psychology and CAS (communication of the arts and sciences).  A few tidbits about myself, I am a pretty good cook, huge fan of Saturday Night Live, and I LOVE sports, especially cheering on my Philly teams (look out for Gang Green this year!) and this guy! Of course like everyone else in this class and at this University, I love Penn State! Surprisingly, when I was in high school, Penn State was not even on my radar of choices of where I wanted to attend because it is a popular choice among my high school and I just wanted to try something different. Luckily, my dad, who did not go here, but absolutely loves this University, talked me into visiting the campus and I immediately fell in love. I guess the saying is true, "parents know best."

Now on to the matter of science. Science and I are probably as close of friends as Duke/North Carolina, Red Sox/Yankees and Real Madrid/Barcelona, not real huge fans of one another. My mom is actually a microbiologist, someone who loves science, but no one else in my immediate family ever got into it. I am not going to be a science major because I do not consider myself a "math/science" person, for one I was never good at either of them, which probably raised the idea in my head that I shouldn't like them. I took the basic classes in high school for graduation requirements, biology, chemistry and physics, and I definitely jumped for joy the day I was done. Unfortunately, Penn State also wants to make sure that we have a little more science in our lives before we go out into the real world, so here I am. I am taking this class because I need a couple of science requirements for my major and this was one of the classes my advisor recommended to me because it was different from most science courses in that it wasn't all about bacteria, formulas and having to do labs. So far, I am really enjoying the class and I have gotten some good vibes from the first week. Andrew seems like he will be an amazing teacher and give us some cool knowledge on topics we might have never even thought of. It is possible I might even like science a little bit after taking this course...but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

When I read your post and you referenced Penn State not even being on your radar when applying to/thinking about schools, I could relate right away. I live 5 minutes from Plymouth Meeting and just like you, a ton of kids from my school choose to attend Penn State each year. But it was things like this that made me realize what an amazing place this is. I couldn't be happier!

I live in Broomall which is like 20 minutes from Philly. Like you, I am in the College of Communications for Film and Media Studies and I love Saturday Night Live, especially the older seasons. I love all the Jeopardy skits with Will Ferrell. http://youtu.be/5n2hrARWZqs
