"It's good to be home."

blog 2.jpg In recent science news, an international three-man crew onboard a Russian-made Soyuz capsule returned home on Monday morning after 123 days at the International Space Station. They capsuled landed in Central Kazakhstan and was retrieved by a fleet of Russian helicopters. Onboard were NASA's Joe Acaba and Russian colleagues Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin. The Soyuz remains the only way for astronauts to reach the space station due to the decommissioning of the U.S. Shuttle fleet in 2011.

From this mission, some history was made. Sunita Williams became the second women in history to take over command at the station on Saturday. Also, Gennady Padalka became the fourth most seasoned space traveler in which having spent 711 days in space over four missions.

It is crazy to think about humans being in space because of the great dangers that come along with it. Everything has to be perfect and having one thing slightly off could result in fatal disasters as the entire world watches. These types of articles remind me of the movie Apollo 13, which exemplifies the grave dangers of trying to accomplish something that few people on this planet can say they have. Having the ability to travel to space would be the coolest thing that a person could do in his or her lifetime and coming back home safely is a true testament to the hard work that is performed behind the scenes.

When I first saw the picture I though it was a real life Operation Dumbo Drop... However learning that it was a 3 man capsule from space rather than an elephant only made it more interesting! The amount of work and precision that it took for that little capsule to safely land back on Earth astonishes me. I struggle to comprehend how they could send people up to such a small target that is constantly moving and then bring them back in one piece. What can almost seem like a routine task anymore was once a massive accomplishment for man kind, putting a man in space. The future of every space program is set on a much greater target now, The Red Planet.
