Is All Tanning Bad For You?

Who doesn't love having a glowing summer tan? People go out of their way to tan all year round. Living in Long Island, so close to the beach, the time of year is irrelevant when it comes to working on my tan. Many people take drastic measures to reach their interpretation of a "summer glow." While spray tanning has been deemed harmless by many researchers, it goes hand in hand with tanning booths; a true "tan addicts" home away from home. Users tend to disregard the fact that tanning beds give off Ultraviolet (UV) radiation which has prove to cause irreversible cell damage. According to SkinCancer.org, people who use tanning booths are 74% more likely to get melanoma (a tumor commonly linked with Cancer). While we all know that tanning in these booths is bad for you, many people are unaware or inattentive to the fact that natural tanning causes much harm as well. Cell damage is the key issue with many of these avid tanners actions, however millions of people around the globe continue to harm themselves. There are different types of UV rays emitted during this tanning process such as UVA, UVB, and UVC. For years, scientists believed that UVB was the most harmful of the rays, because it is linked the most with skin cancer, however recently it has been discovered that UVA rays also increase skin cancer risks.

So, yes tanning in booths is very harmful to your skin, but more and more we're learning how harmful tanning is in general. Of course one is not to fear the sun and completely avoid it but it's extremely important to protect yourself from the sun! First piece of advice is to stay away from the tanning beds, theres no way of protecting your skin in those! Second, apply sunscreen regularly when in the sun!

There are so many things in our society that people are fully aware is bad for thing- but do anyway. Smoking, like we talked about in class, is a prime example, and tanning goes along with that. At first, I thought to disagree with you saying "While spray tanning has been deemed harmless by many researchers, it goes hand in hand with tanning booths; a true "tan addicts" home away from home." because I have also thought spray tanning to be harmless, but this article actually informed me of the risking of all types of ways people try to alternatively keep their summer glow. Staying informed, and like you said, protecting yourself are the best ways to make the choices that will effect us in the long run. Right now, it may be okay to smoke, it may seem okay to tan, but we may be paying for that later.
