Hypnosis and Smoking

After our class on Tuesday, I began to think a lot about smoking and ways people can stop.  There are many people who smoke and want to quit, but can't because of how addicting it is.  I remembered that my Grandpa used to be so addicted to smoking that he would smoke at least a pack of cigarettes everyday.  Now, he gets disgusted at even the smell of smoke.  He was a successful quitter, and it was all thanks to hypnosis.  Yes... Hypnosis.  Many people think hypnosis is a myth, and I did too until I heard the story of my Grandpa getting hypnotized to stop smoking completely.  I decided to see if there was any science behind it.  There is no absolute proof that hypnosis is real, but I found some interesting stuff!  Apparently, the subconscious mind is accessed because the deep relaxation and focus exercises of hypnotism calm the conscious mind and it becomes less active.  The subconscious mind takes over and people react automatically to impulses and suggestions.  The link posted below leads to a website that discusses many theories and studies about hypnosis.  Some studies show that people under hypnosis have different brain wave activity than those fully conscious.  Researchers have suggested this by taking electroencephalographs (measurements of electrical activity) of subjects' brains.  These measurements show that people under hypnosis are more relaxed and really are in a different mental state than conscious people.  Since my Grandpa was relaxed, open to suggestions, and really did want to quit smoking, he listened to commands to stop and hypnosis really worked on him.  He part-took in "habit-control hypnotic treatment," which focuses on a habit the person has that is embedded in their unconscious.  The subconscious is then reprogrammed to stop the habit.  In my Grandpa's case, the hypnotist told him that he does not need cigarettes and does not want them.  He built up my Grandpa's willpower.  Many people think hypnotism is scam or a waste of time and there are many studies that don't support it, but after seeing it work on a family member, I believe in it!

At my school's senior lock-in after graduation this year, the school hired a hypnotist and took about twenty kids on stage and hypnotized them. He made them do the absolute craziest things, stuff they would NEVER do if they weren't truly hypnotized. So I 100% believe that hypnosis works! I've never heard of habit-control hypnotic treatment, but it sounds pretty sweet. I guess it makes sense if habits are actually controlled by the subconcious mind that they would be reversible through the process of hypnosis.

I, too, have witnessed hypnosis firsthand while in high school. I think it is interesting that hypnosis can help with something as important as quitting smoking.Im curious as to what else hypnosis can help. Can we solve bigger world problems with hypnosis? Also, does every person respond to hypnosis the same way? If hypnosis is truly a healthy resolution to kick a nasty habits like smoking, it should be used more often that we are hearing about.
