Dogs - a Cheetah's Best Friend

Since I'm from San Diego, CA, I often visit the San Diego Zoo. Normally, I make my way to the gorilla, tiger, and orangutan exhibits, but this time, I came across something much more shocking.Cheetahwdog.jpg
I walked up to the placard which gave the name and details of a dog in the enclosed area. I could visibly see the dog, but wondered why they even had such an exhibit. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a cheetah sprinting towards the dog. I panicked as the dog was looking at me, wagging his furry tail. By the way, cheetahs can reach a top speed of 75 mph Cheetah Sprint. As the cheetah lifted it's front legs, I could sense imminent doom for this happy canine.
To my surprise, the cheetah wrestled the dog to the ground playfully as the dog lunged back. They appeared to have a close, friendly relationship. This sort of relationship between these two species completely blew my mind. I mean think about it...a dog and super vicious cat being best friends? yeah right...
According to the article, the well-mannered dogs appeared to have a calming effect on the cheetahs, which made the cheetah non hostile. The cheetah as well provided the companionship which dogs crave. They grew up together from a young age, and became incredibly bonded. Even after all the zoo visitors have headed home, "the cheetah gets to cuddle up to his big ball of fur friend and use him like a pillow."

This raised many questions for me. What about the dog gave the 'calming' effect to the cheetah? Why would a typical solitary animal befriend a pack animal?  Cats and dogs have been at odds for years...whats up with that?

*I highly suggest anyone visiting the San Diego area to check out this exhibit!

That's pretty crazy to think about, and it's something I'll definitely have to check out if I ever make it back across the country again for vacation.

Do you know if the cheetah and dog grew up together? I've heard of similar cases where animal cubs of different species grew up together and that's why they get along later in life. It would be even stranger if the cheetah-dog friendship is relatively new.

Take a look at the article that i linked up top. They grew up together from a young age and mentioned that it would probably not work if they came together at an older age. It has been interesting to see how different species have lived together. There are even examples of children who grew up with animals from birth living together as well. They are known as 'feral children'. http://www.smashinglists.com/10-feral-human-children-raised-by-animals/
It's very interesting stuff

This is a really interesting topic and I'd love to be able to actually see this one day! The one thing that was on my mind when I read this though was that it's quite possible that they were only friendly with each other since they grew up together, right? Because I can't imagine seeing a random dog and random cheetah being put into the same area and being friendly to one another. Maybe I'm wrong though and there's something more behind the whole phenomenon.

That's amazing! I would have thought about the "Dogs chase cats" argument until you said that the two animals grew up together from early childhood. With this in mind, the species doesn't matter, and they see each other as brothers. I wonder if sharks can be friends with whales...

There is actually another article which i found a similar situation, although slightly less bizarre. It is about a friendship between a dog and elephant. check it out!
