Can you "catch' obesity?

Many people joke around and say that "they look obese today", but obesity is a serious issue, especially in the United States. There are also many theories about why obesity is such a major problem, especially in the U.S.A. The question is...can you catch obesity or do you bring it upon yourself?
Many people think that obesity is "being fat". But, the actually definition of obesity goes further than just being fat. Obesity is when they have so much excess weight that it affects their health in a very negative way. A way to measure this is Body Mass Index (BMI). If your BMI exceeds 30 kilograms per meters squared, than you are considered obese.
There are many different causes of obesity. One way to become obese is to consume more calories than you burn. In addition the major causes are age. As you get older you cannot metabolize foods as quickly. Gender is a major cause because women have a genetic tendency to be more overweight than men. This is because men have a quicker metabolism.
Another major factor is genetics. According to the scientists of webmd.com, if your biological mother is heave as a child, then that child has a 75% chance of being overweight. Environmental factors, psychological factors, illness, and medication can also cause obesity.
So...just because your biological parents are obese does NOT mean that you will become obese. Yes, there is a higher chance but all of the other factors play a major role in whether you will become obese or not. Obesity is not a sickness like the flu that can be caught just by coming in contact with someone. It takes years of bad eating habits and other factors to eventually lead to obesity.
Being obese can cause major health problems such as heart disease and eventually death because of poor health. If you are someone or know someone who is obese that does not mean that it cannot be fixed. Shows such as The Biggest Loser have proven that if you exercise regularly and eat correctly, you can avoid obesity and lead a healthy life.
Society today has shown that skinny people are famous and that being super skinny is the norm. It is not necessary to engage in drastic eating habits in order to be "stick skinny". It is just important to eat right and exercise in order to lead a healthy life and avoid obesity because it is an epidemic in the United States.
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. This trend needs to change as soon as possible or else in the future the United States will be a very unhealthy place.

Hannah,

Obesity is a very big problem in this country and needs to be addressed before it becomes too late. An article came out today stating that in every state, 44% of the people will be obese by 2030. That is very tough news to swallow. The NFL is always airing commericals promoting the Play 60 program which tells kids that they should play for atleast 60 minutes a day. I think that is a great start to the problem but other programs must be enforced so we can combat this issue.

Obesity is an obvious problem in this country, and when I mean obvious, all you have to do is walk on the street in a city. Many of the people are visibly heavy. If you have ever been to Europe, you can observe that when walking around, people are skinnier in general.

The biggest contribution of obesity in America is fast-food. Everywhere you go you are surrounded by fast food. Specifically in State College we have McDonalds, Canyon Pizza, Burger King, Panda Express and Taco Bell among others. For college students, fast food is ideal because it is cheap, filling, and fast! Unfortunately, this is how the rest of the United States sees it as well. Many Americans live a rushed lifestyle, which is why they do not have the time to sit down and actually cook their own meals. Another main reason is how the big portions are in America. Supersize your drink for a dollar extra! Mega size your ice cream if you buy toppings with it! IMDb gives a summary on the ever so popular Fast Food Nation (a book and a movie). The story discusses how the fast food industry has taken a serious toll on our nation. It is a very interesting and educating story if you have not seen or read it yet! Ever been to a restaurant in Europe? Most of them serve meals that only use a fraction of the plate.
According to an article
in The New York Times, The Centers for Disease Control concluded that men are an average of seventeen pounds heavier and woman an average of nineteen pounds heavier than they were in the 1970’s! More shocking, the amount of overweight children has more than doubled since then!

Although I see so many overweight people in my everyday life, these statistics are still shocking to me. Our generation needs to be the start to a healthier lifestyle so future generations can grow up in a healthier society!

I thought this picture is funny; hope nobody is offended!

Whenever the topic of "can you catch obesity" was proposed in class, I found this to be very silly and a pathetic excuse for being overweight. As I read your blog, I am reminded that obesity cannot be used as a synonym for being overweight but it is a far more complex medical issue. I still feel that it is one's responsibility to be able to make sure that they are not consuming more calories than they are burning. With the major health crazes in the world now, it is not difficult to check the calories before eating something or to make sure what you are eating was cooked in a healthy and nutritious fashion. Instead of just saying that maybe we caught obesity from our genes or slow metabolism, we must first reflect back on our own eating habits and evaluate whether we are making healthy choices for our body.
