Autism Increase ?

images.jpgI think it's easy for all of us to be able to say that the sophistication of medicine has greatly increased over the years. I think it it is safe to say that it gets more and more sophisticated every single day. So with increasing knowledge and procedures is it possible that doctors and psychologists to notice a particular disorder more frequently as they see it? Back in March a study was done showing the 1 out of every 88 eight year olds have autism. The previous link will lead you to a very interesting online article where i found that statistic. Another great example of how awareness may be the reason for the increase is this. A study in 1990 used 489 children and tested them. The study found that 108 of these children had mental disability. Psychologists went back and used todays autism tests and found that 64 of those 108 children had autism. My thoughts are that is this awareness increases the numbers for Autism might actually decrease. The reason I'm thinking and I could be completley wrong in saying this, but seeing that there will be more criteria to qualify as autistic so any diagnosis that might not be correct would be completely reversed with the growing knowledge.

Your final thoughts are very interesting on this topic of autism. If I'm correct, you are saying that there are too many "autistic" kids diagnosed, therefore people will start to put a higher standard for autism? Do you think that could occur for a bigger illness, such as cancer? I feel that the criterias to qualify as autistic will stay the same, but perhaps treatment will be different? This reminds of me of how many kids are diagnosed with ADHD, yet some are treated with medicine and counseling, while others aren't really treated at all.

I understand the reasoning behind your ideas with regards to the diagnosis of disorders and diseases and I especially agree with the ADHD comment. I think this because in this day in age anyone can walk into a doctors office and say they cant concentrate and will be given Ritalin or Adderall, which then leads to many more problems. However with problems like these I highly doubt they will raise requirements to be diagnosed because it would be very difficult to discern from those who have the disease form those who may not.
