Are you SENSEless?

Why do we need to be touched?

I find it interesting that people need touch, I know personally that I love the sense of touch. Whether I am at a mall or a restaurant or meeting someone knew I remember things based on touch. For example when I go into a store to go shopping I touch the clothes as I pass the racks. For some strange reason I love the ability to feel what I may be buying. It really makes me wonder why I am like that. So I began to search and asked the question do people need human touch?

While reading through an article on ehow.com I learned about a study that Dr. Rene Spitz took on in the 1940's that proved that sick babies that were not touched were more likely to die. The study proved that babies needed to be touched and they needed the normal affection that a healthy baby would get.

In the article it explains that touch is a reassuring sense. It reassures us that everything is okay and will be fine in the long run. I find this interesting since I know it effects me personally. I agree that when I hug or high-five a friend it gives me a sense of reassurance that my friend is okay and that I am as well. I think the most interesting thing about the article I read is that while reading it I came to a better understanding of myself and the people I am around.

I second that! Touch is an important aspect in the lives of young children, especially infants. Infancy is a time in when we are searching for security in our world and what is better to show your baby they are safe then holding them close to you? It is beyond frustrating to me to hear mothers say they let their babies "cry it out" or that they will spoil their child if he/she is held too often. Touch is immensely important in helping your baby grow into a healthy and confident child. Thank you for this article, I loved it!
