Sickness with Changing Seasons

Right now, all of my roommates are sick. The four of us are constantly together sharing everything, including colds. It's not just us- it seems to be that everyone is sick, at least thats what twitter and facebook tell me. The weather is just starting to change, and it seems  that a lot of people get sick as the seasons turn. Obviously it's not the weather itself- how could I catch a cold from the rain?

Our bodies, including our immune systems, become used to a certain temperature. As the temperature changes, our bodies have to adjust. According to Ashley Mackenzie, it's the atmospheric pressure that causes illness during any sort of weather change, not just just seasons.

As the weather gets colder, the more likely sickness will be spreading around even faster. When its chilly outside, more people spend more time indoors, meaning more germs will spread faster.

Mackenzie suggests what any doctor would: proper diet, exercise, and hand washing. These things can decrease your chances of getting sick with the seasons changing, but don't guarantee anything. From personal experience, I'd suggest stocking up on airborne and emergen-c.

Emily,

I always get sick when the seasons change too. I thought it was just due to the change in temperature but as you explained in your blog it is due to the atmospheric pressure. Especially when winter rolls around, for the first week or so everybody seems to be sick and now I know why. There is no real way to prevent this from happening but we can do some small things to decrease the odds of us getting it. My sister is a kindergarten teacher and is an avid supported or airborne so maybe I will give it a try!

I always get sick during the season changes too! I never really knew why this happened but I have always wondered about it. I am just glad I have a valid reason for telling my roommates why I got them all sick and will definitely have to try some airborne.

I unfortunately have also fallen ill to the seemingly Penn State disease that has plagued the campus and tied us all down to our beds. I typically try to stock up on as much hand sanitizer and nyquil as I can throughout the winter months. I wrote another blog about how the winter months can even lead to depression:

So if we are just going to get sick and depressed in the winter, what do we have left to look forward to?
