2012 Where the Mayan's Right?

As many of you may know, the world is predicted to end on December 21, 2012.  Many scientists have explored the idea of how the living life on this planet will be eradicated. Some Scientists say it all has to do with a global realignment, others say it will be a massive solar flare from the sun as it proceeds to die, and some say the earth goes through "ages" and 2012 marks the end of a 2,147 year long cycle in which we enter in to the age of Aquarius.  On December 21, 2012 we will reach the end of the 5,126 year Mayan calender.  It is presumed that this date shall mark the end of human existence with no real indication from the Mayan's why the calender stops there.  Do we believe that the Mayan people may have had some insight to the prediction of major natural disasters? or Is the pop-culture media using this end of the Mayan calender as a selling point? or are our imaginations running wild?

Global Realignment:
Some physicists say 2012 marks the time in the earths cycle where an imbalance of the Earth's magnetic field will reach a point that the Earth must realign itself.  This would cause the earth's axes to turn completely horizontal and the north and south poles would be centered around the equator.  This realignment will cause cataclysmic events such as those depicted in the hit film "2012."  Major typhoons, land-masses ripping themselves apart, and lava rivers free-flowing through the streets.

Solar Flare:
Some astronomers says that the sun is to blame.  As we all know the sun is a star made up of burning gasses.  As we also know, stars die.  It's been said that the end of the Mayan Calender marks the end of the sun's life.  The earth's crust will continue to get hotter.  Then there will be an enormous solar flare that will wipe out the earth's ozone layer and leave living life on earth unprotected from UV light and the earth's crust will burn and kill all living life.

Age of Aquarius:
Astrologers believe that the earth's axes completes one full rotation every 25,765 years. This is known at a "Great Year." And in that great year we have 12 great months or "ages" consisting of 2,147 normal years.  Some believe we are reaching the end of our age (Age of Pieces) and we approach the age of Aquarius.  Based on the exact position of the constellations scientists have calculated the age of Aquarius to arrive in 2600.  But wait!
that is no where near 2012.  Other scientists say somehow there where miscalculations and based on the end of the Mayan Calender the beginning of the age of Aquarius must be December 21, 2012.

I feel like there is an awful lot of speculation in all of these theories.  So, do YOU think we are going to cease to existed after the winter solstice December 21, 2012?

After running several sites painted with web advertisements and "2012 doomsday" keywords, I can say that this was and is a great monetary scheme for both the dot com industry and Hollywood. The peak of media coverage for this subject is yet to come.

Research finds interesting and factual evidence from NASA and other solid sources -- not supporting the doomsday theory -- but supporting a maximum of solar flares (sun cycle is every 11 years), interference with the power grid, and satellite damage (all of which has happened before).

Conspiracy theorists range in opinion from "Planet X" consuming our planet (perhaps it does exist?) -- to the Greys coming back.

On a side note, might I say that if the Greys do come in 2012, I would like to be a part of their crew aboard their TR-3B (or better suited Mercury-based anti-gravity craft)...

This was really interesting! And it's funny because I was considering doing a blog on this because I just saw the movie "2012" on Sunday night! After I watched it I found myself unable to sleep with all these thoughts running through my head. I don't know whether to believe it or not and frankly, I don't even know what to think. The thing that scares me is that according to everyone that Mayans have been correct with everything so far. And plates in the earth' crust shift all the time so what if it ends up being like the movie?! It will be interesting to see all the crazy things that people do leading up to this so called "end of the world as we know it."

I also find this topic interesting. Nick is right when he says the peak media coverage is yet to come. If people are hysterical now, imagine what they will be like December 2012. In addition to the Mayans, Nostradamus also predicted the end of the world on the exact same day. Many conspiracy theorist try to point out all the other things Nostradamus got right to prove that he will be right again. Your post made me aware of doomsday scenarios I hadn't heard before. I don't know if anything's going to happen, but things will be very interesting leading to 12/21/2012

It seems a lot like the media ploy surrounding Y2K! Although the Mayans have been fairly accurate in predicting other world phenomena, I'm not sure how much credibility this one has. However, as society goes today, we can assume the media attention will be astronomical, if nothing else!

Personally, I don't believe that the world is going to end in 2012. Many people had similar speculations when the year 2000 rolled around and of course nothing happened. It's probably safe to say that the media is using the potential end of the world as a major selling point because people are interested in it- and most some may be frightened.
