Service & Outreach

While at Penn State, I have participated in Conference organization (American Chemical Society & American Carbon Society), and I have led several education and community outreach activities regarding a hydrogen economy (Clean Energy Expo, EGEE Parents’ Day, and H2Energy Day).  Based in part on my management training in industry, I have developed, implemented, and/or led several professional development programs.  At Penn State I have developed a prototype Research Modules web site and presented a Project Management presentation to EGEE graduate students.  While at the University of Michigan, I led the group that conceived Academic Careers for Engineers and Scientists (ACES) Program to focus on the research demands and skills expected of aspiring engineers and scientists to complement teaching-based Preparing Future Faculty programs. Secondly, I proposed the University of Michigan’s Graduate Mentoring Award, which recognizes senior graduate students that have demonstrated commitment in mentoring of other students.  I also conceived and directed the development of the Academic, Personal, Professional, and Leadership Education (APPLE) Program at the University of Michigan which provides recognition to students who make a concerted effort to develop non-technical skills in project management, leadership, written communication, oral communication, and service.
