Woman Dies in Fire, 911 Places Her on Hold

I just overheard, as I was peacefully studying in the sanctuary of my living room, that a disabled woman (as in she can't walk) was placed on hold by 911 while her bed was on fire.

Maybe I'm just assuming that when you dial 911 you have an emergency to report. I'm sure the call center employee had heard a handful of "my cat is stuck in a tree" & "my keys are locked in my car", but this is just ridiculous. The poor woman was burned alive "because of a malfunction" in the 911 system. How long has 911 been in use?

WOW. That is terrible that 911 did not respond in time. My uncle is on NYPD and he has told me some stories about the 911 calls not being responded to quick enough. This is terrible and we as a society should do something about it. Any Suggestions?

That is really upsetting to hear. The 911 operators are there to assist us in an accident not put us on hold for whatever reason, there are plenty of operators around to answer an emergency call. I do know that if something like that happened to somebody I know and am very close to, I would try my hardest to have that operator prosecuted or something or other. I hope that the operator that put this handicapped lady on hold was fired imediately!
