I have spent the bulk of my professional life as a teacher, writer, and editor. I have written and published in a variety of genres, including personal essay, technical writing, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. I have written both for pay and for pleasure.

After earning a bachelor's degree in English and economics from the University of Virginia in 1984, I went on to earn a master's degree in English literature, also from UVA, where I focused primarily on African-American literature since the Civil War. I have taught literature and writing at both the high school and college levels. Currently, I teach composition classes at Penn State, University Park, and a World Campus on-line course on American literature since the Civil War. Over the past several years, I've taught Freshman Rhetoric and Composition (ENGL 15 and 30), Advanced Rhetoric and Composition in the Humanities (ENGL 202B), and Technical Writing (ENGL 202C).

Other recent experience includes work as an editor for an admissions consulting company (Accepted.com) and a grant writer and newsletter editor for Pennsylvania Certified Organic. The writing I've done for these organizations informs my instruction of Technical Writing, and so from time to time, I will refer to writing I've done in those contexts, using their websites as portals:

On a personal note, I've lived in State College with my husband and two young children since 2001. I've coached basketball at the high school and youth levels, enjoy skiing with my kids at nearby Tussey Mountain, and make sure to travel south each year for Spring Break (looking for a little more sun than State College can provide).
